Roy G. Biv

We are making rainbow cities. We did it because it is the rainy season. The colors of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The colors are very magnificent. Rainbows can be seen when water is reflected with the sun.

We made weird buildings in a good way, and they were different shapes and colors. There were lots of scraps all over. Then on the background paper, we glued the paper buildings onto the white paper. This was a fun project because we got to glue all kinds of things.

By the way, Roy G. Biv is the colors of the rainbow. "R" stands for red, "O" stands for orange, "Y" stands for yellow, "G" stands for green, "B" stands for blue, "I" stands for indigo, and "V" stands for violet. This is a way to remember the colors. Roy G. Biv is not a real person!

Ash Wednesday

Cassandra, Christina, Andrew, and Marcus are proud to have ashes on their foreheads.

Today OLPH School celebrated the Ash Wednesday Mass. Everybody got a cross on their forehead made of ashes. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent to prepare for Easter. During Lent, we make a sacrifice, we pray for the needs of others, and donate food and money to the poor. One type of sacrifice is giving up meat on Fridays.

Our school is raising money for missions in Africa. Each student collects change and puts it into a special box to send to Africa. It is called the "Magic of Change."

Catholic Schools Week - Visiting the SPCA

The third grade visited the Central California SPCA on Wednesday of Catholic Schools Week. It is an amazing field trip that gives the students awareness of animals in need. The staff at the SPCA are fantastic and take the time to show us the entire facility. The kids love looking at all the animals. This year we even got to see a snake. The SPCA does not turn away any animal. They are an amazing organization.

Mark made a special donation to the SPCA, so they had him fill out some paperwork to become a member! That was a pretty special moment for him. We are so proud!

Catholic Schools Week - Reading/PJ Day

Tuesday of Catholic Schools Week was Pajama Day and Reading Day. We spent the day in pj's, eating snacks, and reading all day. We also had a special visit from the Grizzlies Mascot Parker. He came to school to read us a story and encourage us to read 10 books in exchange for baseball tickets.

Catholic Schools Week - Hippie Day

I owe a big apology to all our faithful readers for not updating the classroom blog in quite a while. Sometimes we just get very busy at school. It is completely my (Mrs. Forcey's) fault. I am going to attempt to get the blog caught up, and then I will have the kids resume blogging for your reading pleasure.

We enjoyed Catholic Schools Week at the end of January. We celebrated each day that week with a different theme. Monday was hippie day. Here are a few pictures of some 3rd grade hippies!

The Inauguration of Barack Obama

Last Tuesday, the inauguration of our 44th President took place in Washington, D.C. Other former presidents like President George W. Bush and President Clinton were at the inauguration. John McCain was there at the inauguration, also. John McCain is the person who ran for president against Obama, but lost.

Almost four million people were there. All the important people in the U.S. were there on the special day in Washington, D.C. Obama gave a really good speech. He talked about how people should not fight. He also wants there to be peace in the world. He also talked about people who have lost their jobs. There were so many gaurds there.

Our class was watching the inauguration on our class T.V. It was fun. There was lots of flags there. We liked seeing all of the important people. It was also neat to see our first black president take the oath of office.

Later in the evening, we saw Obama and his wife dancing at the Inaugural Balls. Obama promised his kids they could get a new puppy.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although we don't officially celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day until Monday, we have been studying him in our classroom this week. Today is his birthday. Here are some things we learned about him.

We learned that when Martin was little he couldn't play with his white friend because there were Jim Crow laws that meant that black people couldn't play with white people.

When he was going home from a speech contest, Martin had to stand on the bus for 90 miles when white people were going to sit down in the bus.

When Martin was older, white people didn't like him speaking out, so they bombed his house in one night.

One day Rosa Parks had a very long day and sat down at the front of the bus and then some white people were going to sit down where she was sitting and the bus driver said "Get off of the seat." She refused. Then the bus driver said, "I will call the police if you don't get off right now." She said, "Go ahead and call them," and she went to jail.

The black people decided to boycott the buses in Montgomery. The boycott lasted for 381 days.

Martin gave a speech that was called, "I Have a Dream." It was said in Washinton D.C.

One day he went to Tennessee about a problem and after that he went out to the balcony of his hotel and got shot. His friend was beside him protecting him. He died one hour later in the hospital.

We honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. since that happened and he changed history forever.
